Help us fill the Oklahoma skies with kites! Tulsa Regional STEM Alliance is excited to offer kite kits and additional resources for schools to host their very own Siegfried Kite Festival! Thanks to the generosity of our donor, educators can request FREE kite kits and access a collection of online resources to help teach the science and history of flight and the cultural and historical significance of kites. A select number of schools or youth serving organizations will also be chosen to receive a "Kite Festival in a Box" with additional books and activities to host their own schoolwide celebration.
Hosted by Tulsa Regional STEM Alliance
Who: Open to any educator, school, or youth serving organization in Oklahoma
Class Sets of Kite Kits: Class sets come in bundles of 25. These kits include kite sails, wooden spars, kite string, a roll of kite tail, and instructions for students to build a Dermer Sled kite. You'll need to provide tape and, if desired, permanent markers to decorate the kites. Teaching resources are online for anyone to use (https://tulsastem.org/kite-festival/), which include a slide deck with historical and cultural relevance of kites and the science of flight, and additional resources for teaching flight concepts from sources like NASA. Recipients will be asked to post on social media and tag @TulsaSTEM during implementation of program.
Siegfried Kite Festival in a Box: These kits are designed to serve a minimum of 300 students so organizations can host their own kite festival (if you serve fewer than 300 students, you should select the class set option). In addition to the kite kits and access to the online resources, you'll receive a set of books on various reading levels that showcase the science and history of flight, cultural and historical significance of kites, and the diverse contributions made to advance flight. The kit will also include a ready made flight activity including supplies, as well as tape and markers to assemble the kites. Recipients of the Siegfried Kite Festival in a Box will be asked to post on social media, share photos, students quotes, and data such as the number students served at the end of their festival.
When: The anticipated distribution of kites and kits is mid to late April, and you should plan to use these materials with students before the end of the school year unless other arrangements have been made, such as use in a summer program. All Siegfried Kite Festival in a Box recipients will need to turn in their reporting information by May 31 unless other arrangements have been made. This application will remain open until all kites/kits are granted.
